Cardiff is the capital and largest city in Walesand the eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom. It is Wales’s chief commercial centre, the base for most national cultural and sporting institutions, the Welsh national media, and the seat of the National Assembly for Wales. The port of Cardiff is really important for the economy in the UK and has expertise in the handling of containers, steel, forest products, and bulk cargo. The port contributes more than £120 million to the UK economy each year and supports 2,000 jobs.

Cardiff University is ranked 99th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, an influential league table of global institutions. It has been named Welsh University of the Year in The Times & The Sunday TimesGood University Guide 2018, climbing 11 places in the guide and now ranked 35th. The University is ranked 37th in The Complete University Guide 2018, and tops the league table in Wales. Also their World-leading research was ranked 5th amongst UK universities in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework for quality and 2nd for impact.
