Throughout the Industrial Revolution, Plymouth grew as a commercial shipping port, handling imports and passengers from the Americas, and exporting local minerals. The neighbouring town of Devonport became a strategic Royal Naval shipbuilding and dockyard town. The city is home to 264,200 people, making it the 30th-most populous built-up area in the United Kingdom and the second-largest city in the South West, after Bristol.

The University of Plymouth rises 7 places to 77th in this year’s University League Tables, ranking highly for Reaserch Quality and Intensity, and Student-Staff Ratio in the regional South West table. The University has been twice the winner in the Guardian University Awards, in 2013 for Students Experience and in 2015 for Social and Community Impact. Plymouth also wins in 2014 its first Times Higher Education Awards for the outstanding work of the Hydrographic Accademy
