CHALLENGE

EHB were asked to arrange and host a four week summer school for a group of undergraduate students from a leading University in Shanghai in the summer of 2015.

SOLUTION

While every EHB summer school is bespoke to the client’s needs this case study provides an example summer school to provide some ideas as to what can be included and what structure can be provided.

In summer 2015 EHB welcomed eighteen students from a leading University in Shanghai accompanied by a programme leader and his wife.

2015 summer school for leading University from Shanghai – students gathered after entrepreneurship and innovation business speakers’ session in London.

Our guests spent three weeks at a leading University in the North West of England followed by a week in London. Throughout their stay they were accommodated in University halls of residence with 24 hour security and staff on hand to answer any questions or queries they might had.

The students were met at the airport on arrival and accompanied back to the airport on departure. At the beginning of the three week stay in the North West we hosted a welcome dinner and at the end of that three weeks hosted a farewell dinner. We then provided the same at the beginning and end of the one week in London.

During the three weeks in the North West the students undertook a short, academic, course of study comprising a module with a credit bearing of 10 UK credits (this was in their chosen subject area of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, accredited at Level 4 in the United Kingdom qualification framework conforming to the assessment criteria and regulations of the University in the North of England). The period of study was for three weeks with fifteen hours of delivery per week. These studies were then complemented during their week in London with the provision of a series of case study based lectures by entrepreneurs and business people who had established their own successful businesses and could talk about the highs and lows of doing such and the lessons learnt.

The course also incorporated the opportunity for students to improve their English Language ability (this element of the course did not receive credit).

Throughout the students’ time in the North West they were taken on many cultural and fun visits to the highlights of that area.

At the end of the three weeks the students travelled (with Ann) to London where they were met by Jon at the halls of residence of a famous London University. Ann and Jon were present throughout the week in London and on call 24 hours a day to answer any questions and to ensure the students were comfortable, safe and enjoying themselves.

The students attended a welcome dinner in an old English public house opposite the famous Harrow School where we also hosted a farewell dinner on their last night.

During their time in London the students enjoyed a series of lectures on entrepreneurship and innovation by EHB business clients who had run their own successful businesses. The students also enjoyed the famous City of London with Ann and Jon on hand to offer advice and guided tours as required.

The students thoroughly enjoyed their experience and at the end of this case study are some of the  students’ comments as well as an e-mail from the course leader commending us on the experience provided.

E-mail from programme leader:

Dear Jon,

All of our students have been safely back to Shanghai from this wonderful and deep-impressive exploration in UK. As the leading teacher, on behalf of all the members of this USST summer program delegation, I want to extend our gratefulness to all of you for your thoughtful arrangements, detailed introduction and quick adaptation during the four-week journey for our students.

You and your colleagues just showed  a very good example to our students the true spirits a entrepreneur should bear: having a clear goal in mind and stick to it despite of any difficulties, achieving the goal by all means despite of any unexpectations. We all remember, for the first three weeks,  Ann paid one trip each week all the way to the University to discuss and modify the London itinerary with us with patience.  Also we all could not forget, when you found out there might be a tube strike during our London week, you tried all your best to guide us adopting the London ground transportation system and even managed to collect a bunch of London bus maps for us. Only after you learned that the strike was called off, did you take a deep-breathed sigh of relief and relaxed down for a while. That explains why all the students showed their high-appreciations in the final evaluations. Our students may not all become entrepreneurs one day, but at least they could learn from your lectures and your behaviors, and perfect their personalities by some positive  entrepreneurial spirits and consciousness.

This visit is just a beginning for our long-term friendship and cooperation relationship.   Chances of various kinds of cooperation are waiting us ahead. We will do whatever we can to enhance and further these relationships.  We will send you the download link to the photos we took in UK later because at this moment there are so many things need my full devotion.

As you said, the younger would definitely shape the future.  I feel very proud to be involved in helping them shaping the future, and meanwhile, become more  and more confident about the future.

Finally please allow me to show our sincere gratitute once more to you, Ann and your colleagues who helped us during our time in England.

Yours sincerely,
